Strategic Planning

Project case study

Client: City of Gold Coast

Objective

Council's Waste and Recycling Centre (WRC) network is under significant pressure to manage the growing population and to ensure it is fit purpose to maximise the recovery of resources from the waste stream.

What we did

  • Assessed waste volumes and customer transactions across the entire WRC network;
  • Detailed financial analysis of current business approach and a range of potential alternatives;
  • Identification of innovation approaches to recovering resources and improving the customer experience at WRC’s.
  • Supported Council with clear actions to move towards achieving the City of Gold Coast Solid Waste Strategy 2024.

Outcomes

Preparation of the business case identified that closure of specific WRC's and the development of a premium WRC site will deliver a 15-20 per cent cost saving over 20 years, in comparison to continuing with business as usual. This approach can be realised and still maintain a 20-25 minute drive-time to waste facilities for over 98 per cent of the City of Gold Coast residential population.
